Florida - Oh! I'm SO Excited!!!!

After my very somber previous post, I've decided to get tough and find something new to pump me up. For some time hubby and I have entertained the idea of moving to Florida. He grew up outside Tampa and I lived in Naples for a few years in the 90's. I loved it, only left due to divorce.

However after reading this article -

http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/s1048944.htm

The wheels began to turn and I'd like to give myself the best chance with this disease. And yes, heat aggravates my MS. However, MS aside in TN or PA or anywhere else with less sunshine I ever lived, I feel less healthy. It is easier to lead a healthy life in Florida where there is an abundance of seafood, veggies and fruits! And unlimited sunshine. I SO miss that. I'd never left Naples if I didn't get divorced.

So right now I am formulating some ideas about the healthiest way for both me and my husband to live and moving may be one of them. However, I am not ruling out conventional MS treatment either. I like a combo of both myself. So what I need from any of you is - What is the best MS establishment in the state of Florida? Where is it located in Florida? Any Doctor Recommendations? Suggestions where I can find info etc...

I need people who live in Florida with MS to tell me how they deal with the heat during the summer.

Oh...I'm so excited!

Geez, were you in my house today? Hubby and I were talking about just this thing this morning at 5AM before he left for work.

His argument is that the heat will kill me. My argument is that the winters here in PA are killing me and that the sunshine, Vitamin D abundance from the sun and the food bounty in Florida are all in support of my argument to move.

So....he went to work saying he'd think about it. Hey, that's more than I ever got out of him before! Now the issue is jobs....can all of us get work there with a decent wage and actually live on it because the cost of living there is higher than here.

Can't wait to read your comments on this topic....

Hi Anne: That is funny that you are also weighing moving options. So you also know - Denver, Colorado - gets 300+ days of sunshine a year and has great year round temps. We are considering that also. FL is just a benefit of having family nearby and of course beaches....

The cost of living isn't any higher there if you know where to move too. Most places on the West Coast (gulf) are more affordable, especially if you live inland like 15 miles or more. I prefer the gulf coast because it is not as "young touristy" and the waters are more calm. The pay when I lived there was less. One employer actually told me that you get paid in "sun dollars"...yeah right. In your profession though I am sure it is not an issue!

I'm going to research a bit more. I figure if we decide to make this move it will not be until next Fall. That will give me the summer to see how I do here in TN and if I can handle the heat I'd rather move to FL in the Fall when the winter temps are on the way! :)

Keep me in the loop on your findings if you research! :)

Hi Lanette,

As a kid, I spent a lot of time outdoors in the sunshine - well, all summers anyway. In the northern latitudes we only get enough Vit. D from sunshine from about April/May to September. You can always take Vit D supplements, which I do in the winter.

I really don't know what the prevailing winds are like in Florida to aid in keeping you cool. I actually think Hawaii would be perfect as there are constant breezes.

There are a few bloggers in Florida. Stu from Stu's Views and News lives there and would be a better one to ask. I was in Florida once (to go on a cruise) and loved the bugs and lizards.

Hi Shauna:

I take Vit D, but it's just not the same as sunshine. My hubby calls me his solar powered wife. I'm not a nice person on a cloudy day. Though I do like the occasional cloudy day, most of the time I prefer sunshine!

And we are just tired of TN. My only hesitation is the heat. The heat already bothers me here. Errrr...

Yup, FL has many bugs and lizards - I chased around a few lizards in my bathroom when I lived there in the 90's. Trying to catch one of those suckers and hold it to release outside was tricky! :)

Get yourself a bug net from the dollar store.....they're not great in enclosed spaces, like tiny bathrooms but if you cut down the long handle they're more manageable and you'll be scooping up those critters in no time. what fun!

Hi Lanette - speaking of heat, not Florida, but temps have been in the mid40 C here (Melbourne) for the last week. Not sure what that converts to as a number in fahrenheit but pretty sure 'bloody hot' covers it in any measurements.

How about a job that sends you to a chillier state in the summer?? :)

In the mean times, have you tried cooling vests/scarves? Not the biggest fashion statement but they are quite effective insulation - sometimes triathletes (as well as the heat intolerant) use them to keep their core temps manageable and circumvent fatigue.
